Crack cocaine, more commonly referred to as “crack,” is the crystal form of cocaine. The crystals are solid and vary in color from light pink to pale yellow to white. The crystal is broken down into powder. The powder is then heated and the smoke that it creates is inhaled. Smoking crack is referred to as “freebasing” or “basing.” Crack cocaine is coined “crack” because of the cracking or popping sound it makes when heated. Other street names for crack include base, nuggets, rocks, gravel, dice, hard rock, iron, and cavvy.
Crack is between 75 and 100% pure, which also makes it the purest and most dangerous form of cocaine. It’s highly addictive, and since it is smoked, it reaches the brain faster than any other method, such as snorting. The high is immediate, but it only lasts for a short while – about 15 minutes. It’s also a lot less expensive than traditional cocaine. Given the purity of the substance, the immediate high it offers, and the low price, it is extremely easy to become addicted to crack cocaine.
